On May 2nd, 2011 I lost my father, my teacher, my best friend. This beautiful song by John Mcdermott says nearly everything I could say and much better than I could. I miss you dad and always will.

"Harry Potter is about doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend." -Stephen King

I’m, first and foremost, a Harry Potter fan. I started in this fandom by reading Harry paired with Severus or Lucius, tales of strong, snarky, mature men in love with a powerful emerging Harry are wonderful to read. But now I’ve moved on to Harry/just about anybody but Voldemort. I have an especially soft spot for Harry/Ron. They just make sense to me. Slash is my first love, but well written het and gen have their places too.

Here at Live Journal my priorities are to keep up with my favorites and to get to know new authors and artists, as well. I’m no writer, I wish that I could be, but I worship those of you who are and who are so generous with sharing your talent.

I tend to have one main active fandom and to follow it forever. Even when it gradually dies off, I still keep tabs on it but pick a new major one to concentrate on. I got into HP with the publicity before the book release of Chamber of Secrets. I read an article in Newsweek that speculated whether or not it could possibly live up to incredible phenomena of the Sorcerer’s Stone. The reviewer caught my attention and I found myself at Barnes and Noble on CoS release day and bought the first two HP books. I read both of them in one non-stop session, and have never looked back. After catching up on my sleep, I started searching the web and news-groups for fanfic. Needless to say, things were in their infancy, but I’ve been here ever since. I’m not a devoted shipper, although I tend toward slash as a preference. I’ll read Harry paired with nearly anyone, if the story is well written. He’s my boy.

I was in my senior year of high school when the first season Star Trek was on TV. It was completely new and exciting at the time and there was just something about James T. Kirk and his first officer, Spock. When I got to university in the fall of 1967 I made friends with a group that was passing around mimeographed Trek fanfic and zines, most of it was het, and ever since I’ve followed the fandom off and on. This was my first exposure to slash, probably two years into the show, and wasn’t that an eye-opener… I still think Kirk and Spock were meant for each other. Now I’m getting very interested in the Star Trek Reboot Universe and while I still love Kirk/Spock, with the help of Karl Urban, I’m finding Kirk/McCoy and McCoy/Spock fascinating as well.

Recently, I’ve been diverted by the Merlin fandom. At first I struggled with the historical and literary aberrations of the TV series. But, now I’ve let go of that entirely and just enjoy the beautiful boys and the fantasy of the magical Merlin Universe.

My other major fandoms were The Sentinel, Highlander, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars-Master and Apprentice and Stargate 1. I also follow The Man from Uncle, Due South, Good Omens and a number of other smaller ones. I read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings as a child and reread them a number of times over the years, but didn’t get involved in LotR fanfic until I’d seen the Jackson films. Hugo Weaving and Orlando Bloom are Elrond/Legolas, my one true pair for LotR. I love Tolkien’s elves!

I’ve also dabbled in these other fandoms, some of them smaller, and some of them large, but I didn’t get quite as captivated as the ones I listed above: Diagnosis Murder, Dr. Who, House, Lord Peter Wimsey, Matrix, Northern Exposure, Pet Shop of Horrors, Star Trek – the Next Generation, and Voyager, Starsky and Hutch and The Man from Uncle and Torchwood. The last group is in alphabetical order, not in order of preference.

I’m retired, at least for now. I worked in HR for many years. I’ve was in Human Resources for about 20 years, 10 years of that was as a manager and then for the last 15 years that I worked, I was the EEO Administrator for a major US company. My company relocated to another city in 2002 and I took the buyout offered and retired.
